      The four most common types of water flow meters are turbines (also called mechanical flow meters), eddy current, ultrasonic, and electromagnetic flowmeters. This article will tell you all the information you need to know and help you choose one for your application.

      Types of Water Rotameter

      Turbine water flow meter

      Turbine flow meters are the most popular and cheapest method of water flow measurement. They are usually designed with propellers, splitters, or paddle wheels to measure the speed of water flowing through pipes equipped with rotating turbines or pistons. The volume flow of water is proportional to the speed of the rotating blades. Sadly, these meters can block dirty water or large chunks of water, such as process water, which can increase maintenance costs, so for these applications, we recommend the use of electromagnetic process flow meters. They also do not work well under low traffic conditions.

      Vortex water flowmeter

      A vortex is a "vortex" formed when fluid flows over an object, such as river water around rocks or airflow over an airfoil. In a vortex flowmeter, when each vortex passes, the sensor tongue will bend left and right, thereby generating a frequency proportional to the volume flow. The multivariable vortex flowmeter can measure up to five process variables through one connection: volume flow, mass flow, density, pressure, and temperature. The plug-in vortex meter works well on very large pipes because you can use the retractor to insert it by heat tapping.

      Ultrasonic water flow meter

      Ultrasonic water meters use ultrasound to measure flow. The time difference ultrasonic meter sends a signal downstream and another signal upstream. Then, the meter compares the propagation time of the two signals to find the flow rate. Finally, it uses this calculation to find the volume flow. You can also use the difference between the hot and cold legs to measure energy and temperature.

      The clamp-on ultrasonic meter sends a signal through the pipe wall to measure the water outside the pipe. This feature makes them ideal for measuring flow in large pipes and various other processes.

      Electromagnetic water flowmeter

      Last but not least, electromagnetic flowmeters use magnetic fields and Faraday's law of induction to measure flow. The liquid flowing through the magnetic field generates an electric charge. Therefore, when the fluid flows faster, it generates more voltage proportional to the movement of the water. Then, the flowmeter processes the voltage as a flow rate.

      The accuracy of the electromagnetic water meter is not high, so it cannot be used for custody transfer. They also cannot work on pure water, because it has no measurable ions, so it can only be called a qualified water flow meter.

      Depending on the brand, you can also choose a series of chaotic liners. You need to understand the chemical compatibility, flow rate, and potential wear in the application. Therefore, this information will be your factor in choosing the best liner for your application.

      Water makes flow application simply because you do not need special lining materials. For pure water, you can use a simple lining, such as hard rubber or polyurethane, but if you expect to use corrosive chemicals or process water, you need something else.       Remember, your process water determines the equipment you use. Certain chemicals may corrode your flowmeter and shorten its service life. If your production water contains chemicals, you need to use Teflon lining to prevent corrosion. Otherwise, just use polyurethane or hard rubber lining.
